Project Description

2016 Tondre Grapefield Pinot Noir

Santa Lucia Highlands AVA

Tasting Notes

“Medium red hue. This Pinot Noir is loaded with scents of cloves, jasmine, anise and pomegranate. With some aeration, notes of cranberry, blood orange, and bing cherry add complexity to this fine Pinot Noir. As this wine lands on the palate, the fruit qualities advance in front of the spice and floral notes. The texture is immensely enjoyable with unctuous and dense concentration. It is layered nicely amongst modest acidity and velvety tannins. The finish just keeps getting better and rewarding. Enjoy now through 2025.”

Past Vintage Wine Scores

“Medium to deep ruby-purple colored, the 2015 Pinot Noir Tondre Grapefield has a nose of baked cherries, warm plums and cranberry sauce with nuances of new leather, black soil and sautéed herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers mouthfilling spicy and earth-laced fruit with velvety tannins and great length.”

“Cooked cranberry scents are enlivened by turned earth, dewy sage and a touch of wildfire smoke in this bottling from the Los Gatos-based winery. Baked red-cherry flavors meet with a savory pork-au-jus-like element on the palate, redolent with roasted thyme and oregano. A licorice element rises toward the finish. It’s mellow in intensity but with lots of depth.”

Wine Enthusiast

“Red cherry, root beer, a touch of sage and bay leaf and an shiitake-powered umami sensation decorate the nose on this wine from one of many single-vineyard expressions in this producer’s portfolio. The palate shows cooked cherries and cranberries that float across a Mediterranean elements of olive, fig balsamic and menthol.”

Wine Enthusiast

“Deep ruby color; tight, earthy aromas with some cherry and oak notes; deep, dense, complex stewed cherry flavors with some spice and oak notes; good structure and balance; long finish. Deep, dense Pinot that needs time in the glass to open up.”

Tasting Notes

“Deep, dark red hue. Scents of pomegranate, cranberry, red cherry and papaya lead the nose and are followed by elements of cloves, jasmine, and orange. As the wine rests on the palate, notes of orange, cherry, and cranberry persist. This Pinot Noir is a crowd-pleaser with its silky smooth and expansive tannins, yet will pair nicely with food due to its vibrant acidity. The wine ends with a bright, fresh, yet delicate finish. Enjoy now through 2025.”

Tasting Notes

“Brick red color. There is a pretty nose of orange blossoms, lemon, and grapefruit that is balanced by cherry, pomegranate, strawberry jam, rose petals, cloves, and vanilla bean. Flavors of citrus, red fruits, and spice spill over into fine grain tannins and moderate acidity. This Pinot ends nicely with a lingering, complex finish. Enjoy now through 2024.””
