Project Description

2017 Tondre Grapefield Chardonnay

Santa Lucia Highlands AVA

Tasting Notes

“Pale yellow hue. Bright aromas of pear, apple chutney, and fig followed by fresh notes of watermelon, melon, honeysuckle, and grapefruit. These elements segue to the palate seamlessly. The acidity, while present, is tamed by dense, and unctuous concentration. As this Chardonnay lingers, it exhibits smooth, silky, and seductive qualities. Enjoy this hedonistic wine from now through 2024.”

“From its richly oaked, decidedly juicy, wide-open aromas of apples and sweet cream to its broad, very deep, insistently fruity flavors, this is a near-lavish Chardonnay that holds nothing back. It is full in body and exceptionally long on the palate with a well-sustained sense of fleshy substance, but it never threatens to be excessive in any way with just the right degree of freshening, sweet-lemon acidity warding off so much as a hint of heaviness. It will make splendid drinking with richer seafoods such as lobster or salmon in the near term, and, if properly cellared, it can be counted on to keep handily for another four or five years.”

Wine Scores

“Brilliant straw-yellow. An expressive bouquet evokes tangerine pear nectar jasmine and toasty lees while a dusty mineral nuance adds urgency. Potent orchard fruit and citrus pith flavors show very good definition and pick up a deeper nectarine element with aeration. Smoothly combines power and energy and closes very long and taut displaying vibrant mineral and honeysuckle qualities”.

“The 2015 Chardonnay Tondre Grapefield Vineyard delivers lemon curd, grapefruit and peach blossom notes with suggestions of baker’s yeast, orange blossoms and chalk dust. Medium-bodied, it has a great core of citrus fruit intensity and mineral layers, providing wonderful energy and verve, finishing long and zingy.”

“Lastly, the 2014 Tondre Grapefield Chardonnay is another rich, textured, even sexy, white that has a broad, expansive, medium to full-bodied style as well as superb notes of ripe orchard fruits, caramelized pineapple, spice and integrated oak. Possessing impressive purity, moderate acidity and a decadent style, I wouldn’t push the aging curve and would drink bottles over the coming 2-4 years.”

The Tondre Grapefield

Originally planted in 1997, the Tondre Grapefield is growing in popularity and recognition as well. Testarossa Winery has been making Tondre Grapefield Pinot Noir since 2012 and Chardonnay since 2014. Tondre is located directly in the center of the Santa Lucia Highlands just to the south of Soberanes and Garys’ Vineyards. Joe Alarid and his team hand-care for each vine where they have multiple clones planted within the 80 acres of Pinot Noir and 21 acres of Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

“Pale straw color. Notes of fig, green apple, and kiwi comprise of the aroma profile. With added aeration, elements of crème brulee, caramel, vanilla bean, and papaya round out the nose. Upon taste, the flavors remain consistent, with apple and caramel leading the way. With viscous, yet delicate texture, this Chardonnay pleasures the palate with a lively and lovely finish. Enjoy now through 2025.”

Tasting Notes

“Straw hue. This relatively new addition to our Chardonnay line-up is showing great promise out the gates. Complex array of fruits ranging from kiwi, ripe grapefruit, papaya, banana, and all the way to apple, key lime pie, and pineapple notes. These characters segue gracefully into the palate and land peacefully on a creamy, custard backbone. While the texture is smooth, lush, and expansive, it is balanced by vibrant definition. The finish remains persistent, starting bright and fresh, followed by suppleness. Enjoy now through 2024.”

Tasting Notes

“Bright yellow hue.  Scents of ripe apple, nutmeg, kiwi, and grapefruit unite in this Tondre Chardonnay.  Some orange zest, guava, papaya, and lemon lay low in the background, which come out with some light aerations.  Flavors stay consistent on the palate and are framed by a brisk texture.  Generous acidity and vibrant tannins give this Chardonnay a wonderful, youthful focus while staying true to the site where it hails from.  Subtle notes of French oak ripple on the finish and give lasting pleasure.  Enjoy now through 2024.”
