2015 Santa Cruz Mountains “Mountain Select” Red Blend

Santa Cruz Mountains AVA

Tasting Notes

Deep purple red hue. Wonderful aromas brimming with cassis, boysenberry, loganberry, ripe cherry, ripe blueberry, and a hint of sage. Upon taste the fruit profile gain concentration and shows more spice notes of sage and anise. Youthful tannins and modest acidity paired with a long lingering finish lend this red blend to age gracefully for many years to come. Enjoy now through 2027.

Past Vintage Wine Scores

“Deep ruby color; smooth and juicy with tangy blackberry and racy acidity; clean and lush with depth and style; a blend of all five Bordeaux varieties with Merlot in the lead.”

Santa Cruz Mountains

Testarossa has been making a red blend from the Santa Cruz Mountains since 2008. It comes from the mountainous Santa Cruz Mountains appellation that has been home to our winery since 1888.  This red blend was formerly called Meritage, it is now called Mountain Select Red Blend. It is a full-bodied blend consisting of fruit from the Black Ridge Vineyard on the inland slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains just across the highway from the Lexington Reservoir. Cool night and warn sunny days allow for long, slow, full ripening of the fruit. Due to the inherent concentration of this blend, we age it in barrel for up to 24-months so it can develop at a graceful pace, lending to the maximum complexity and enjoyment for years to come.

Tasting Notes

““Very dark red hue. Scents of blueberry, blackberry, and sage portray the initial aroma profile, followed by hints of cocoa, boysenberry, violet, sage, and sandalwood. Upon taste, the flavors concentrate around notes of sage, boysenberry, blackberry, and violets. Bright acidity and lively tannins give a youthful mouthfeel along with the voluptuous texture, providing immediate pleasure. This wine finishes with a long, expansive, and lingering expression. Enjoy now through 2025.””

Tasting Notes

“Deep red hue.  Scents of boysenberry, blackberry, red cherry, pomegranate, sage, and lavender engulf both the nose and seamlessly into the palate.  The distinctive fusion of dark fruits, red fruits, and spice pair well with the firm, yet mouth-filling tannins.  Modest acidity maintains a fresh profile while not over-competing with the tannins.  This multi-varietal blend ends with a structured and youthful touch.  Enjoy now through 2024.”

Tasting Notes

“Dark red color. Blackberry, boysenberry, currant, cocoa, and anise pair nicely in this dynamic Meritage blend. Flavors of blackberry, currant, and cocoa just ooze out into this lush, ’large and in charge,’ wine. Loads of viscosity and concentration from many months in the finest French oak barrels. There is a lot going on in this savory wine and will continue to deliver enjoyment for many years to come. Enjoy now through 2026.”

Tasting Notes

“Dark red color.  Scents of blackberry, blueberry, truffles, pomegranate, and cocoa make for a hedonistic start to this Meritage.  Upon aeration, notes of cream and custard unravel nicely into a very pure, yet refined palate.  Flavors of pomegranate, raspberry, boysenberry, and cranberry are accentuated by fresh acidity and fine tannins.  While restrained now on the finish, this wine should continue to become more expansive and lively in the texture over the near future.  Enjoy now through 2022.”
