Santa Lucia Highlands AVA

Tasting Notes

“Brilliant yellow hue. Scents of ripe fig, apple pie, ginger, grapefruit, and lemon zest leap out of the glass. Upon taste, the flavors focus towards grapefruit, lemon, and apple. The texture is very plush and pleasing, interwoven with moderate acidity. As this Chardonnay rests on the palate, there are incredible layers that ripple out to a long, lingering, and mineral-laden finish. Enjoy now through 2027.”

2017 Vintage Review

“Bright yellow. A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe pear, nectarine, melon and honey, and suave vanilla and floral notes emerge as the wine opens up. Picks up energizing mineral and spice notes with air, complementing the juicy, densely packed orchard and pit fruit flavors. Shows a deft blend of richness and energy and finishes with strong, mineral-driven persistence and resonating florality.”

Past Vintage Wine Scores

“Cohesive aromas of white peach, yellow-nectarine flesh, hazelnut and lemon rind make for a very complex nose on this bottling. The palate is grippy in texture yet full, with flavors of peach, mango and roasted apricot, served atop buttercream and topped with lemon zest. ”

“Bright yellow. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh tangerine, pear and melon, along with suggestions of iodine, toasty lees and vanilla. Palate-staining orchard and citrus fruit flavors are underscored by a vein of smoky minerality that adds back-end lift and cut. Shows impressive tension and focus on the very long, sappy finish, which leaves behind suggestions of Meyer lemon and bitter pear skin.”

“Apple cream, squeezed tangerine and a touch of popcorn make for nice, easy and yet layered aromas on the nose of this bottling by the Los Gatos-based single-vineyard-focused winery. Flavors of Gravenstein apples, browned butter and toast pop on the palate, where an intriguing flinty character pushes this into another level. ”

“Warm vanilla notes are laid across ripe nectarine, apple skin and a twist of lemon rind on this single-vineyard study by the Los Gatos-based winery. Pencil lead kicks off the palate, which then opens into poached apples and lemon oil, laid across a sizzling acidity that lasts long.”

“From a vineyard located right next to Rosella’s Vineyard, the 2012 Chardonnay Lone Oak Vineyard shines for its purity, freshness and focus. Showing stone fruits, white flowers and hints of toast, it hits the palate with bright acidity, a solid mid-palate and a terrific finish. Fermented and aged ten months in 33% new French oak, it’s another classy, very well made Chardonnay from this estate”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“An outstanding, rich, mouth-filling effort that stays classy and pure, the 2011 Chardonnay Lone Oak Vineyard exhibits notes of ripe golden fruits, crushed rock, dried grass and hints of toasted hazelnuts as well as juicy acidity and excellent length. It’s a beautifully done white to drink over the coming 2-3 years. Drink now-2016.”
