2011 La Encantada Vineyard Pinot Noir

The La Encantada Vineyard is one of coolest growing sites in the Sta. Rita Hills. It is planted on a ridge that straddles the Santa Ynez River Valley and experiences the full impact of the cool afternoon ocean breezes.  Planted in 2000, it consists of 96 acres of Pinot Noir.

The 2011 growing season at La Encantada was one of the coolest and wettest on record. Happily, the Sta. Rita Hills was spared much of the fall rains that hit other growng districts; Pinot Noir was picked in mid-October, once full phenolic ripeness had been achieved. This 2011 release is our first vintage from this exceptional property and reflects the cool year in its complex bright fruit, spice, and acidity profile.
Upon arrival at the historic winery, the fruit was carefully hand sorted. A gentle gravity flow process is used throughout the winery. The La Encantada free-run juice went through an extended “cold soak” before being fermented in small, custom, open tanks. The wine was then racked to French oak cooperage, sixty percent being new wood. The La Encantada Pinot Noir was allowed nine months of barrel aging prior to bottling.  Only 6 barrels were made of this exclusive wine.

"Dark red color.  Dark cherry, boysenberry, currant, and a dash of anise make for an engaging first impression to this Santa Rita Hills offering.  Located at a windy bluff, this wine shows great finesse with silky tannins and moderate acidity.  Flavors of dark fruits and spices sail into the seamless finish of this youthful Pinot Noir.  Drink now through 2018."
