Harvest 2007

By the time this article is read, we will be into the rush of harvest. I like to compare harvest to NASCAR racing. There is the preparation beforehand and then the fast-paced. Harvest is a three month race with nine months of preparation. Harvest is quite dynamic. Once the first load of fruit hits the sorting table, the race is on until the last barrel is filled. In this case, the race is to process, ferment and get the juice to barrel in a timely fashion so that the fermenting wine does not spoil.

Much like a racecar driver, it is important to be aware of all our surroundings during harvest. There are many ups and downs; such as equipment failure or a sudden rainstorm. However, it is important that we recover, stay focused and ride the course.

There would be no race without the vineyards and the anticipation of the growing season. This year has been steady during the growing season, from bud-break to the onset of ripening. We have experienced a drought this year though and this has stunted vine growth and subsequent berry size which speeds up harvest dates. With warm steady weather and low winter rains, we tend to see fewer seeds and more skin surface area to juice volume. In essence, it is what every winemaker desires for extraction of flavors and aromas. So far, it is looking to be another stunning vintage across our vineyards.

Before we know it, Harvest 2007 will be over and we will be looking forward to the next race.
