Antonio Galloni Rewards Testarossa's 2012 Vintage with High Marks

"This is a gorgeous set of wines from Testarossa. Unfortunately I was not able to taste the entire range, but I hope to see the rest of the 2012s later this year. In 2012, winemaker Bill Brosseau opted for lower temperatures than normal for his Pinots, as he felt there was more than enough inherent richness in the fruit. As always, the Testarossa Pinots are made entirely from destemmed fruit. The 2012 Pinots were aged in tight-grain low toast barrels." ~ Antonio Galloni

93+ Points        2012 Brosseau Vineyard Chardonnay
Testarossa's 2012 Chardonnay Brosseau Vineyard stands out from the rest of the Testarossa range for its distinct veins of underlying minerality. Orange blossoms, lemon peel, spices and ash meld together in a Chardonnay with an almost Pinot-like sense of phenolic intensity. Chardonnays from the Chalone district have historically demonstrated an uncanny ability to age. I would be tempted to follow the 2012 for the better part of the next ten years, but would not be surprised if it continues to develop beyond that. This organically certified site belongs to winemaker Bill Brosseau's family.

93 Points          2012 Fogstone Vineyard Chardonnay
The 2012 Chardonnay Fogstone Vineyard stands out for its lifted, precise aromatics, much of which comes from the personality of this cool site and the light pressing favored by Winemaker Bill Brosseau. Lemon, white flowers and slate linger on the lifted, beautifully perfumed finish. In 2013, the Fogstone is all about delicacy. The bright, saline finish is particularly of note. Fogstone is the coolest Chardonnay site Testarossa works with.

92+ Points        2012 Lone Oak Vineyard Chardonnay
The 2012 Chardonnay Lone Oak Vineyard is another of the more intense Chardonnays in the range. Here it is the wine's vibrant minerality that stands out. Slate, graphite, white peach, pear and floral notes flesh out in a firm Chardonnay that could use another year or two in bottle.

92 Points          2012 Garys' Vineyard Pinot Noir
Sweet rose petals, blood orange, red berries and a host of bright, high-toned aromas and flavors mark the 2012 Pinot Noir Gary's Vineyard. A highly expressive and also extroverted Pinot, the Garys' is very nicely balanced and complete from the very first taste.

92 Points          2012 Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir
Dark red cherry, plum and smoke notes flesh out in the 2012 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard, a beautifully layered, voluptuous wine long on stylishness. In a year in which so many sites struggled with excessive yields, this Rosella's captures the very best qualities of the year in its supple, expressive personality. Hints of cola and spice add complexity on the generous, enveloping finish.

91+ Points        2012 Niclaire Pinot Noir
The 2012 Pinot Noir Niclaire is nicely lifted in the glass. Savory herbs, leather, black cherries, rose petal, earthiness and iron all find support in the firm yet nicely integrated tannins. Distinctly ferrous, savory notes inform the structured finish. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2012 is going to need time for the tannins to soften a bit.

91 Points          2012 Diana's Chardonnay
Lemon, white flowers, mint and crushed rocks jump from the glass in Testarossa's flagship 2012 Chardonnay Diana's. Here the flavors are bright, lively and focused but the texture is pure California. This nicely balanced Chardonnay offers plenty of near and medium term appeal. Diana's is a selection of the best eight barrels in the cellar.

91 Points          2012 Doctor's Vineyard Pinot Noir
Dried tobacco, savory herbs, leather, smoke and rosemary are some of the notes that inform the 2012 Pinot Noir Doctor's Vineyard. There is more than enough fruit to balance out the firm tannins. The pliant, expressive finish is quite appealing. I expect the 2012 will offer its best drinking over the next handful of years. This site was initially planted with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, but later grafted over with Pinot.

91 Points          2012 Rosella's Vineyard Chardonnay
Layered and succulent in the glass, the 2012 Chardonnay Rosella's Vineyard captures the essence of the Santa Lucia Highlands in its tropical-infused fruit, honey, flowers, butter and pastry. This is one of the more overt wines in the range. An oily, textured finish rounds things out nicely.

90 Points          2012 Dos Rubios Vineyard Chardonnay
Typical Santa Lucia Highlands tropical-inflected aromas and flavors meld together in the 2012 Chardonnay Dos Rubios Vineyard. Crème bruleé, spices, mint and orange zest all add complexity on an intense, layered finish supported by expressive saline notes.
