2011 Guidotti Vineyard Pinot Noir

We are very excited with this debut release from this new vineyard which is farmed by three brothers, Elmer, Milton and Jim Guidotti.  Testarossa’s Director of Winemaking, Bill Brosseau has known the Guidotti family since Bill could walk.  When Bill found out that the Guidotti brothers were looking for a winery to partner with in their newly planted Pinot Noir vineyard, Bill knew it would be a natural fit.

The Guidotti family started their farming in Arroyo Seco with dairy, sugar beets and lettuce.  In 1951 the brothers’ father purchased this property in what is now the Santa Lucia Highlands Appellation, at the time the property was used mainly to grow barley and to graze cattle.  The Guidottis continue to farm lettuce, seed crops and other row crops here.  In 2008 they added 12 acres of Pinot Noir to their ranch, located at the southern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands, choosing clones 115, 667 and Pommard.

The 2011 growing season in the Highlands was one of the coolest and wettest on record. Happily, most of the fall rains bypassed the SLH. The fruit was able to hang as long as necessary to achieve ripeness. The Pinot Noir were picked in mid-October.

Upon arrival at the winery, the fruit was carefully hand sorted, de-stemmed and allowed an extended cold soak. The whole berries went through primary fermentation in our custom open top fermenters. The free run wine was then racked into French oak of which approximately forty percent was new. Secondary malolactic conversion occurred naturally. The wine was allowed ten months of barrel aging. Ten barrels were produced.

"Winemaker Bill Brosseau's Tasting Notes:  "Deep red color.  Dense aromas cherry, blackberry, and ripe blueberry make for an exciting offering from this new vineyard.  Rich flavors of cherry and blackberry continue on through the palate, matched by abundant, juicy tannins.  This Pinot Noir is oozing concentration yet pulls back before being too overdone.  Look for exciting things to come out of this vineyard in the years ahead.  Drink now through 2020."
